Bird Flu Vaccine Could Save People, Pets

One vaccine could protect people, pets and farm animals from bird flu, according to a new study.A study in the November issue of the Journal of General Virology says that the vaccine works against various strains of the virus in mammals and can even be given to birds in the egg.By vaccinating eggs against influenza, a researcher said, health officials could protect wild bird species as well as domestic chickens against pandemic flu strains, limiting the spread of disease to humans.

"The word is experiencing a pandemic of influenza in birds caused by an H5N1 virus. Although it has been restricted to Eurasia and some countries in Africa, there is a risk that this virus may spread worldwide," said Daniel Perez of the University of Maryland. "To prepare for a pandemic, it would be ideal to have a vaccine that could be used in multiple animal species."Researchers modified another strain of influenza, H9N2, to make it less pathogenic so it could serve as a vaccine. All vaccinated mice treated with it survived infection with the strain that caused the 1918 Spanish flu, as well as bird flu.

Nearly 70 Animals Rescued From Indiana Puppy Mill

More than 60 animals saved from a Fairbanks, Ind., puppy mill are now on their way to better lives thanks to the diligent efforts of local authorities and local and national humane organizations Oct. 8. The animals included 52 dogs, 10 horses, four cats, and one goat.

"The puppy mill industry affects many hundreds of thousands dogs every year in this country, but today we have been able to free 52 dogs from this horrendous cycle of abuse," said Anne Sterling, The Humane Society of the United States' Indiana state director. "It is extremely gratifying to know that we have given these animals the opportunity to experience the joys of life outside the confines of their squalid cages."

Rescue Mission

The HSUS was there from the beginning acting as the lead animal welfare organization for this rescue mission. The HSUS was called in to assist Indiana State Police with the rescue and care of these animals. They were joined by members of the Humane Society of Missouri, Indiana Animal Care and Control, dedicated local volunteers and veterinarians as well as the USDA Office of the Inspector General.

The property owner voluntarily agreed to surrender 67 animals to the care of The HSUS. These animals were rescued from squalid living conditions on the 20-acre property. Many of these dogs were emaciated and suffered from obvious medical conditions such as open sores and severe skin conditions.

These animals will be transported to the Sullivan County 4H Fairgrounds, where an emergency shelter has been set up to comfortably house all of the dogs. Once at the shelter, every animal will be assessed by a veterinarian and given any necessary medical attention. They will then be transferred to humane organizations where they will be evaluated and placed for adoption.

Fighting the Abuse

The HSUS has long fought the abuse rampant in U.S. puppy mills and works to stop this abuse on multiple fronts through its Stop Puppy Mills campaign. United States animal shelters euthanize 3 million to 4 million cats and dogs every year, and yet pet industry statistics show that about one-third of the nation's 11,000 pet stores continue to sell puppies. Many of these dogs come from puppy mills—mass commercial breeding operations that put profit above the health and welfare of the puppies and their parents.

A Trip Down the Pet Food Aisle Reveals Harmful Food Additives

I took a little field trip yesterday to Walmart and paid a visit to the pet food aisle. It was one of the most discouraging field trips I’ve ever taken. I’m not going to mention any product names but do I have some interesting pet food sales tricks to share with you.

The number one interesting marketing technique (and I have changed the exact words to protect the identity of this pet food) -- Blazoned across one pet food was Crunchy Beefy Nuggets™. Did you catch it? Crunchy Beefy Nuggets is a trademark name –- it’s a name! It has nothing to do with the pet food, it doesn’t necessarily contain any beef, and it is literally just a name. Very slick –- not healthy pet food, but slick pet food marketing.

The most common sales technique I found was pet foods that are ‘flavored’. The actual name of the pet food was ‘Steak and Vegetable Flavor’ or ‘Chicken and Fish Flavor’ –- one even got very specific with the name mentioning Albacore Tuna and Yellow Fin Tuna Flavor. The trick there is the pet food is just Flavored with steak and vegetables or Albacore Tuna -- that’s not really in the pet food. Again, it’s just the flavor. Most people do not get that, they see Albacore Tuna and Yellow Fin Tuna or they see Steak and Vegetable, they don’t see Flavor. Most pet owners just assume that since the front of the pet food bag –- in big bold letters says Albacore Tuna on it –- it’s got Albacore Tuna inside the bag. If the food actually had Steak and Albacore Tuna in it, it wouldn’t say ‘Flavor’ on the front. It would say ‘with Steak and Albacore Tuna’ and it would cost more (Albacore Tuna does cost more than Albacore Tuna Flavor).

One pet food proudly stated ‘No Fillers’ on the front of the bag, yet in the small print of the ingredient list -- Ground Corn, Chicken by-products, Corn Gluten Meal were the first three ingredients. Sounds like fillers to me!

Another mentions “New Shapes and Colors”. Let’s see, does this mean this pet food is using more Red Dye now or more Yellow Dye? Very discouraging.

One pet food bragged that it contained Protein and Phosphorus for Strong Muscles. Phosphorus? Wikipedia provides us with the following: “The most important commercial use of phosphorus-based chemicals is the production of fertilizers. Phosphorus compounds are also widely used in explosives, nerve agents, friction matches, fireworks, pesticides, toothpaste, and detergents. Among other uses these are used to improve the characteristics of processed meat and cheese.” I’m not sure I’d brag about that.

I found a lot of pictures of steaks and chicken on the front of the pet food bags, but I had a very challenging time finding any beef or chicken listed in the ingredients. Oh, but I did find a lot of BHA and BHT, Animal Fat, and Dyes.

I left the pet food aisle just shaking my head –- actually more than a little blown away at how many by-products, meat and bone meals, and BHA/BHT pet foods that were there. In the 20 minutes or so I was looking at pet food and pet treat labels, probably five or six pet owners came in and purchased pet food. I kept my mouth shut, but it was very tough to do. To give Walmart a little credit (geez I hate to do that), there were a couple of pet foods that were good (not great, but good). I understand that not everyone can afford to spend $25 for a 20 pound bag of pet food. But in my opinion, no one should spend a dime on pet foods that contain by-products, meat and bone meals, and BHA/BHT (or other chemical preservatives). The dime or nickel you save for each meal your pet eats will probably cost you years off their life and thousands in vet bills later on.

Buyer Beware When you Get a Puppy!

Pet store temptation - we have all suffered from it when viewing the cute and curious menagerie of animals on sale. Do you ever give some thought to where these animals come from?

In a relatively small number of cases that might be true, but the fact remains that puppy mills supply huge numbers of puppies every year to pet stores, internet sales and even apparently reputable dog breeders’ sites. What is a puppy mill? you may ask. The answer may shock you.

Puppy mills are canine intensive breeding plants, where literally thousands of puppies are bred to supply the pet industry. It’s a sad life for a puppy mill puppy, from the very start.

Puppy mills pups tend to suffer from poor health, temperament issues and hereditary conditions. At the mill, they are taken away from their mother before the recommended weaning time of 10 weeks, therefore not receiving the right socialization and benefits of being fed by their mother.

Poor health is contributed to by a lack of decent food and water, terrible cramped living conditions and overcrowding; and there is little chance for them to experience positive human interaction before being transported to the pet store

Usually when breeding dogs, breeders will study the blood line of each of the parents to check whether there is any risk of inherited diseases, so that they breed a healthy puppy. Medical and vaccination programs will also be adhered to, until the time they are released to a loving home.

A good breeder will have spacious, clean and humane premises, and should voluntarily be able to show you the bloodline of your puppy. A breeder ALWAYS gives a guarantee (although details may differ), tips on care, and would never make you return the puppy if dissatisfied, as they would have properly interviewed the family.

There is no such ethos at the Puppy Mill, where money talks fast and loud. They breed dogs regardless of health, disease or family history, which is a recipe for disaster.

Breeding dogs are kept in miserable conditions, without proper attention to their diet, health or exercise regime, and forced to breed every time they are in season, physically exhausting the dog, and leading to weaker puppies. At the end of their breeding life, the dogs are often killed or abandoned.

There is legislation in place but puppy mills still exist. Consumers can help stamp out these intensive dog breeding plants buy only buying puppies from reputable breeders ( visit the premises, get recommendations), consider adopting ( this is the most humane way to stop the industry and to help rescue a dog who has been abandoned), refuse to buy from pet stores ( many of them do not know or mislead their customers as to the origin of the puppies).

Don’t buy a puppy mill puppy just to save him. You will just create the market for more puppies to be produced. The best thing to do if you see puppies being bred or kept in inappropriate conditions is to inform the appropriate animal protection authorities who will be able to take action.

Puppy mills are a sad fact of supply and demand, so don’t add to the problem by buying puppies of which you do not know the origin.

A Guide To Choosing A Leash For Your Dog

The best possible leash to get is one of flat leather or nylon webbing, preferably half inch wide or more. You may have to shop around to get, for pet stores and department stores go in heavily for fancy and useless plastic leashes, thin leather ones and even chains. Avoid all of these.

Any very thin leash of any material will cut into your hands if you have to use any force on it (and sooner or later you will). Make sure it is of good leather or solid webbing, with a loop, big enough to get your hand through and firmly stitched at the other end from the snap.

The snap is important too. There are two good kinds, one with a sliding rod at the side of the snap held firmly in place by a spring, and one which has two curved metal hooks which slide along side each other to make a secure catch for the ring of the collar. Avoid completely the fancier snaps you will see on some leashes, especially the kind that comes apart at the tip of the snap and is held together by a spring.

Six feet is exactly the right length for a leash, regardless of the size of you or the dog. In fact, some city ordinances require leashing at all times in public, and that the leash shall be no longer than six feet. Do not waste money on anything longer at present with the idea of giving him a little more freedom, as you and he will get all tangled up in it. The longer canvas leashes you may see in pet stores are for tracking, where considerable length is required.

The new retractable leashes are perfect for small and medium size dogs. The nylon lead is rolled up and housed in a casing that you can hold. Most brands are available in six foot lengths by a one - button braking and locking mechanism. This is intended as a general guide to help you make a logical selection, with an strong emphasis on quality and strength above all else.
